Corporal Punishment

The conformity encouraged by the Japanese school system is maintained through discipline. Surveys reveal continued use of corporal punishment by teachers. In a recent survey, 69% of parents and teachers felt that corporal punishment is necessary to discipline students and that teachers should be allowed to use moderate corporal punishment.

From a Japanese Ministry of Education Guidebook

As teachers are in the position of parents or guardians of the students, they shall be permitted to strike a student as punishment. Since this is the kind of punishment usually given by the parent or the guardian. Teachers shall be permitted to administer such corporal punishment, even if the severity of the discipline causes pain to the students. Such force is considered to be necessary for the students proper control and effective education.

Japanese Schoolgirl Uniforms

Most Japanese junior and senior high school girls wear school uniforms. Generally the uniform is a sailor blouse and a skirt. The sailor uniform is good for both study and sports. The sailor suit has been worn in Japanese schools for 100 years. (Reported by Yuchan, Fukuoka Junior High School)

A typical uniform would be as follows:

SUMMER Light color pinafore dress, sport shirt.

SPRING/AUTUMN Dark color pinafore dress, long-sleeve sport shirt.

WINTER Dark color sailor blouse and skirt.

SPORTS White or light colored sport shirt and dark heavy cotton knickers.

Unlike traditional UK schoolgirls, underwear is not regulated, but plain white panties are usual. Uniforms would be worn with white knee socks. .
